Odense Fjord is a real
magnet for many of the thousands of sea trout that go up into the Funen
rivers to spawn every year, and that migrate back into the sea when the
honeymoon is over. Previously, it was perfectly legal for commercial and
semi-commercial fishermen to set up kilometers of nets in the fjord,
which made it a pure obstacle course for the sea trout to migrate to and
from the streams.
This is the past now.
A new set of rules, the Odense Fjord conservation – from 2014 has given
the sea trout a special status in the Odense Fjord. This means that the
inner part of Odense Fjord, the Inderfjorden, must be completely free of
nets for 5½ months of the year: From 1 December to 15 May. During the
remaining time, fishing may only be done with lures and special gillnets,
which are designed to primarily catch flatfish.
For anglers, fishing in the Inderfjorden is not permitted from 1 October
to and including the 1st Friday in March.
In addition, throughout Odense Fjord, the minimum size for sea trout is
45 centimetres. That is, 5 centimeters longer than the 40 centimeters
that otherwise apply along the Danish coasts.
All together, this means that more sea trout survive and can grow large,
which both contributes to robust sea trout populations and an excellent
sea trout fishery in and outside the fjord. |
